Smoothie and Matcha Drink
Smoothies are simple and quick cold drinks made from blended raw fruits, vegetables, ice cream or yogurt and liquid which can be water, coconut water, or matcha green tea. Smoothie made with matcha green tea are one of the healthiest as it contains the highest level of antioxidant and other vitamins and minerals.
But before we go to the matcha smoothie recipes, let’s take a quick look at what matcha is. Matcha powder is finely ground whole green tea leaves traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremony. But because of its nutritional dense content, matcha green tea is now a favorite drink for any health-conscious people, not just in Japan but all across the world.
It has a mild flavor that is slightly sweet, creamy and not so bitter. It is best to drink it straight but you can create many versions of matcha drinks including a matcha smoothie.
How to Use Matcha Green Tea Powder in Smoothies
There are several grades of matcha green tea but for matcha smoothie recipes, use the kitchen grade. This is the cheapest grade made from the less delicate green tea leaves and has a strong astringent flavor. It is perfect when mixed into other foods.Add one teaspoon to your smoothie recipe but you can gradually increase the amount until you reach the desired matcha flavor or strength.
I prefer to make matcha tea first instead of scoping it into the mixture. Matcha tea powder is not easy to blend and has a tendency to form a 'paste' if not whisk properly.
#1: So, How to Make Matcha Tea?
milk frother |
Add water (about 175 ℉ or 80 °C temperature) or the liquid as described in each of the recipes below, and whisk with a bamboo whisk until matcha tea is dissolved and topped with light colored foams. Mix immediately to the rest of the smoothie ingredients.
Don't have a bamboo whisk? You can prepare matcha tea with a milk frother instead.
No bamboo whisk and no milk frother either? Try this then - in an empty bottle (you can use an empty mineral water bottle which I am sure you will find one lying somewhere!), put water and matcha tea powder. Close the bottle cap and then shake hard until it is thoroughly mixed).
For the high-speed blender, the selections include both the pricey and budget blenders which are good and reliable machines. But with the expensive Vitamix, you will see the difference in the quality of your smoothie. You can use these high powered blenders for other foods as well such as making your homemade peanut butter which will tough with the cheap blender.
